“Act your age” is bad advice


When you were 5, anything was possible. You wanted to be a princess-ballerina-veterinarian? Great! You got started by wearing your tutu and bringing a lizard to breakfast.

Why would anyone choose to leave that world?

By closing off that way of thinking, we close off big hunks of our creativity, our unguarded joy, our resilience, and the ability to be angry with our playmate one minute and back to building sandcastles with them the next.


I’m taking a page from Little Christee today. As I wear my Mickey Mouse shirt to work, I’m letting yesterday’s issues go and using my imagination to create a better today.
